How to Prepare for a Job Interview (Step by Step)

Great interviews rarely happen by accident. Here is a simple, step-by-step way to prepare.

Step 1: Research the organisation

Read their website, recent news and LinkedIn page. Understand what they do, who they serve and what challenges they might be facing.

Step 2: Decode the job description

List the key skills and match each one to a real example from your experience.

Step 3: Prepare STAR stories

Structure examples as Situation, Task, Action and Result. Aim for five or six stories you can adapt to different questions.

Step 4: Practise out loud

Rehearsing in your head is not the same as speaking. A mock interview gives you realistic practice and honest feedback.

Step 5: Plan the practical details

  • Test your tech for video interviews
  • Plan your route and arrive early for in-person interviews
  • Prepare two or three thoughtful questions to ask

Step 6: Follow up

Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours, restating your interest in the role.
